I am a Canadian artist working in beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia.
A miniature door in my apartment leads me down to my studio
where I sew all my monsters and felt creations. As a child I
was always drawing and crafting so a degree in textiles was
a natural step for me. I grew up in England but moved to
Halifax to attend NSCAD University where my main area of
study was weaving and dyeing. When I graduated I picked
up sewing to give myself something to keep me busy in the
evenings after work and I haven't been able to stop since.

My soft sculpture work is inspired by Claes Oldenburg's
work, an artist I have admired since discovering him as a
little girl. I love the idea of seeing something cold, mass
produced and disposable as something soft, precious and
with an obvious human touch. These pieces are very labour
intensive, with each piece taking as much as a month to
complete. I begin by hand dyeing the felt and then sewing
each construction by hand, embroidering all the details.
This means that no two felt creations My monsters are made using recycled materials, such as old sweaters, blankets, scarves and anything else that catches my eye at the thrift store. I love using these everyday materials to give my monsters a new lease on life as scary, carnivorous creatures. Each monster is one of a kind. My work can be found at Argyle Fine Art in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Distill Gallery in Toronto, Ontario. I enjoy doing custom orders so please feel free to contact me if there is a particular creation you would like me to do. |
